Downtown Soup Shack now serving 150 to 200 people a night
The Soup Shack says it is the only organization serving food downtown after 5 p.m. It gets no government funding, CBC reported.
The Soup Shack, which runs out of the former Tim Hortons on Goyeau Street, says 150 to 200 people now come for a hot evening meal every night. Attendance used to peak around 150 and then drop off during the month, CBC News reported.
Board member Wendy Daniels told CBC Radio's Windsor Morning that many new faces have shown up over the past couple of weeks, and the board doesn't know why. It is treating the higher numbers as its new norm.
It is the only organization serving food downtown after 5 p.m. It gets no government funding and runs on donations. Daniels is asking companies and groups to donate a month's worth of soup, or money, so nobody gets turned away.
The City's 2025 point-in-time count recorded 794 people experiencing homelessness, up from 672 in 2024. City officials caution the count is only a snapshot.
